A lot doesn't really need to be said about Thanksgiving this year, though I did write a lot and seem to have lost it somewhere in cyberspace. Anyway, being that the gorging and giftless (but so gift-rich...huh, I've never thought about that) holiday is my favourite of ALL the holidays, it came as no surprise to me that I'd be hosting again (this time sans roommates) this year.
The turkey was hilarious. The butcher, sure he'd screwed up and fetched me a turkey that was FAR too small, gave me an additional breast to cook (pictured below, shoved at the top of the oven, precariously close to the heating element). Both turned out absolutely delicious, despite my "catastrophe" of not having a meat thermometer. Who needs it? I figure since the first Annual Girls Christmas Dinner dinner in 1999, I have cooked a whopping 13 turkeys in my lifetime. I'm what some may call an old hat.
So there you have it... I cooked the turkey and everyone else brought their faves: turnip, scalloped potatoes (which Erik later told me were his favourites. Bet that's the last time he'll missThanksgiving for the closing night of a play! Just kidding), carrots which we infused with some Canadian maple syrup, peas, stuffing (that we all could not keep our hands out of), homemade pumpkin and apple pies, a taco dip (because nothing says Thanksgiving quite likes taco dip), and multiple bottles of wine.
It was a great night, surrounded by friends old and new, doing our very best to make my adorable little house feel like the homes we left behind. I'm fairly certain that leading a good life, a fulfilling life is really only about a few small things: surrounding oneself with people and things that make you happy and then being GRATEFUL for it. It's a pretty perfect time of year :)
As Raffy put it, "All I really need is a song in my heart, food in my belly, and love in my family." Amen, brother.
Here are a few snapshots...
