Our first day in Florence was a dream. The clouds were wispy and light, sky was blue, sun was shining brightly.
Love the buzzer.
A stroll through the leather market on our way to see the replica of David...
Hanging meat and cheese. Love of my trip.
LOVE. That's it.
A bit of repetition. Because you know how I feel about that...
I just adored this woman as she posed for her manfriend. That coat? That flower?! Loves it.
And then there was the cathedral.
The way the blue sky provided a background that made the church pop, the way the Christmas tree glistened, the way we felt being in a city this gorgeous...words can't really explain the joy.
And somewhere on these doors was Queen Sheba ;) I remember seeing these doors when we were in Florence with Brebeuf in 1997. Dad and I had a laugh about who was gilded on here, being that Queen Sheba was my childhood nickname for the longest time. Ah, the life of an only child.
Lovers! In LOVE! With this city!
And then? Even MORE paradise found: Il Fratellini.
We were two very happy campers sitting on a curbside and drinking some wine.
Procuitto and goat cheese panini with rocket. Delish.
Nothing quite like wine on concrete. Makes it more special, right?
Going, going...
...gone.
What a fantastic view!
Chanel at night...
...and the daytime shot.
A great restaurant in the main square (forgive my ignorance...I just don't have the get-up-and-go to go get my map and reference exactly what square the replica of David lives in. Does it really matter?) at night...
...and the next day...
Our first glimpse of Ponte Vecchio...
A bit of lovin' over looking the Old Bridge...
Italy might be the country of love...or of pasta, depending on how you look at it. But Florence is the city of the motorbike for sure.
Across from this church in this square...
...two very happy ladies...
...found the photography show we had been looking for. Here is what we saw...
Once we emerged, we squeezed through this door and found some delights just beyond the square...
On our way to Freisole (pics in another post to follow), I snapped this goody across from the bus stop. LOVES it.
Leave it to me to take a hot self portrait. This was a much-needed plate of cheese antipasto, and calzone after the long trip up to Friesole. The free prosecco was pretty righteous.
I asked our waiter if there was any chance we could get some zabaglione. Since this deliciousness made from egg yolk and sugar is not a common menu item, the waiter went back to the kitchen and whipped this batch up himself. That was pretty much amazing.
Leave it to a waiter to take a great pic ;) A cute waiter. Who was also a DJ. Riiight. I'm out.
Loving the square...
Leave it to someone else to take our picture with David's knees and shins. Right.
A fairly homoerotic David and Goliath. Hmm.
Another depiction of David with Goliath. MUCH more gruesome, right? Yuck.
After a bit of gelato here...
...and after writing a few postcards to Nonni...
...we headed back to the hotel to freshen up. We took the suggestion from Daniele, the concierge, to head north to this square...
...because Daniele had asked, "Do you like meat?" And we had to admit that yes, yes we did. Jamie had seafood linguine and I had ricotta-stuffed ravioli. Pasta ruled our worlds.
In the morning, it was time to ship out and get back to Genoa. We went our separate ways to take advantage of different parts of the city. I headed here for some latte and pizza, while Jamie went shopping for some wine and olive oil. Good day all around, non?
One last latte and we were back on the train headed to Pisa...
