the best of times

Do you have a friend who is hot one minute, then cold the next? Every little step you take is a landmine? Sometimes you think you're in the clear, that you're doing all the right things and then--POOF!--it all goes pear-shaped?

I wonder if it's all worth it. There are friends and then there are fair-weathered friends. Friends are The Ones. They are the ones you'd lay down your relationships, your wealth, your pride for. They're the ones you keep calling even when they don't know what to say to you. They're the ones you keep prodding when you really aren't sure what's wrong but you know something is up. They're the ones who know all your innuendos and secret jokes. They're the ones you quote when times get rough. It's their name in the question, "What would _____ do?" They are The Ones.

And boy, do I have some good Ones.

Then there are the other ones.

I keep trying to channel Stacey in The Best Life Ever when she says things like this:

Ever notice how some people tend to focus more on what's with wrong with others rather then what's right with others?

And do you ever notice how much simpler life is for those who do the exact the opposite?

True that what we focus on we attract, yes?

I'm trying really hard to focus on what is good and what is right; on what makes me feel fulfilled, satisfied, and useful in the world.
