Day Four: Vienna on Foot

On my way to Scholbrunn, after breakfast at the hostel (amazing), I spotted this remarkably tacky dress in a window. Just had to document how Austria does nuptuals. Grimace.

Gorgeous fall colours on the way to Scholbrunn...

And then I saw her...the palace. Remarkable place.

Looking deep into the beast...

Grounds around Scholbrunn...

Yours truly in shadows...

Loving the panorama...

And the VIEW...(and the self portraits)

Loving a few garden paths...

...and how the sunlight dances on the man playing the accordion outside the cathedral...

...while light danced over the fountain at Belvedere.

I still can't get over how magnificent the colours were there...

...not to mention the architecture...

...and the large scale art installations...

...it all made for one happy camper.

The view at Upper Belvedere...

...and the amazing poster I spotted as I left the grounds...

Some stairs...

...some wild horses (well, not quite)...

...and some gorgeous hotels (at which I was not staying)...

This tour of Vienna all gave way to the Opera House. I stopped here for some photos, had a looong cup of coffee, gathered my thoughts, listened to university students argue somethingorother (they sound the same in any language)...

...then walked the grounds of the school.

The roadside flower markets were astonishing in their colours and variety.

...but it was the cathedral that really caught my eye. Though they were undergoing extensive renovations, they installed large scale (again with the large scale) murals to depict the exterior of the building so that passersby could still appreciate the true facade of the building. Remarkable the amount of time and energy they put into this, right? I was moved.

Ah, the town centre right outside the cathedral. Gorgeous.

And inside...

This is the last of the wall that Franz-Joseph built around the Hofburg to protect them against something. I lost that last bit. Anyway, this dates back a LONG time, so preserving even this bit of wall is remarkable.

I should probably google this stuff so to give you accurate depictions of these battles and wartime tales, but then, you don't really read this to get a history lesson, do you? I think I'll leave it just as it is.

One last peek at Vienna before I retired for the night...

Austria looks beautiful. I made a good friend from Vienna on the vacation this summer. I should have put you in contact. :( Sorry. I never thought about it until now.

I hope you are doing well. We miss you.
