Thoughts on Herngasse: last day in Austria

Does travel in itself make us more well-rounded human beings? If I simply go to new places, observe the culture in this news place --watch its people, eat its food, drink its spirits --am I more of a complete person than someone who has never known a culture outside his or her own? for those of you who have seen other places in the world, you would argue (more than likely) that yes indeed, you are more well-rounded now than you were before you ever strapped a backpack on and headed out from home.

But then, you are older too, aren't you? And with age, also comes a greater appreciation for what is outside our comfort zone. After all, how much more well-rounded was I, at 16, after a trip to France and Italy? Most would argue, insignificantly more. And for those of you who have NEVER traveled outside your own home, does it make you a poorly-rounded (square?) person? Is that a comment that a well-rounded (to assume I am one of them) person would make?!

But to be here now, swimming in the culture that both belongs to me and surprises me, I feel a strong sensation of appreciation for the life I've made for myself. It is astounding that I have created this...no one else brought me here, planned the trip, helped to make any decisions. How liberating that I and I alone am responsible for the trip's failures (there have been none) and successes (there have been a landslide).
I have also realized that spending time outside, enjoying cafes and parks, taking pictures of the world around me (even in Dartford!) is a far better use of my time off than lesson planning and watching tv.

I guess I have the bug now. Can't wait for December break and the flurry of activity touring southern France and Christmas-ing in northern Italy will bring.
