Fond Memories

Those of you who spent any time at St. Jean de Brebeuf High School in Hamilton, this image will bring back some fond memories. This is where Alicia and Dave met, in the library, as we planned for our trip to Europe. This is where my Dad teaches: bringing class to SJB in a suit everyday. And this is where, in the gym, I spent much of my tween years. Dad used to coach the senior boys basketball team and it was their constant presence and kind attention that drew me from an incredibly shy girl to an outgoing teenager. That gym was instrumental to my development and I can't think of a better way to have spent a weeknight or a tournie weekend. I recall the smells of the gym fondly...the talks (Dad was very, very stern, but always loving) on the bench...and the cute boys. Hey, let's be honest! Thanks, Dad!

On the wall of the gym before it was recently renovated, was a Leo Buscaglia (how appropriate: he's Italian!) quote: "Your talent is God's gift to you. How you use it is your gift to God." Remember that? I knew you would! The incredibly large painting on the wall was visible from every angle of the gym, and when Dad's team played home games, it stared out on the crowd. What a poignant message. Though the team wasn't all that successful, the time spent there certainly made me more successful.

It was with a happy heart that I found another amazing quote from Buscaglia:
"Worry never robs tomorrow of its sorrow,
but it always saps today of its joy."

So let's not worry. Let's be happy. In fact, my Korean fortune cookie says I'm bound to do just that for the next 365 days. Loosely translated, the fortune read, "Because of the word 'happy' on this fortune, you will feel that emotion for the next year." Obviously!

2010 is bringing on the happy!
