The Kettle

I just taught the class from hell. I would love a cup of tea to help calm the old nerves (the kids didn't know the alphabet! What am I doing here?!?), but I have three bags left at home: not nearly enough to be squandering them and having a Second Breakfast tea.

I wondered where this phrase came from, since I see and hear it (and variations of it) everywhere in the blog community. A blog devoted to old movies called
Viv and Larry, suggests that it comes from a propaganda movie from the 1940's about "the British war effort", called the 49th Parallel. Vivien Leigh and Larry Olivier said many a line that have stuck, and this one stuck with me.

In The Shipping News, the main character ends up capsizing his boat and floating aimlessly in the ocean until he's rescued. The latter character says the protagonist only needs a glass of rum, and he'll feel as good as new. On the contrary, his wife feeds him hot tea with milk: says it warms the soul. I couldn't agree more.

There are some things in life that make you feel good all over. When you find something as simple as a hug or a cuppa tea, it's comforting to know that in this world of every-man-for-himself and go-go-go, such small things can change your outlook and restore you.
